Today, I’m going to show you one of the most popular techniques I’ve ever shared since beginning to create tutorials back in 2013.
The Tom Trick
Before I share the video I have to admit that I know there are a couple of plug-ins that can do this same thing.
BUT!
And a BIG BUT at that…
What I’ve found personally is that the plug-ins like Slate Digital’s Drums Gate (my favorite gate!) can do an awesome job of filtering and cleaning up bleed between toms and cymbals or even snare hits BUT they struggle when the drummer plays with any sort of dynamics. For rock, heavy rock, and/or any other genres where the drummer is consistently hitting the toms hard using the plug-ins is a no-brainer. That being said, most of what I’m sent to mix requires a little more attention to pull this off and I bet you will be able to relate.
Without further ado… I give you…
